Why Large Dog Breeds May Be Right for You

If you have always felt an affinity for bigger dogs, then it should come as no surprise that you are drawn to large dog breeds when thinking of a new pet for the household. In fact, there are several advantages to a larger dog around the house that may not only make the idea desirable, but practical as well. For instance, a larger dog will do a far superior job of keeping intruders off of your property; it will also be less vulnerable to injury that are common among smaller breeds. With that in mind, here are some reasons why you should consider a larger dog as an addition to your family.

Many of us grew up watching the heroic actions of larger dogs on television and in the movies. We found ourselves drawn to breeds such as German shepherds and Collies because they seemed to embody so many admirable qualities. In other cases, we watched television shows where sheepdogs and similar animals often provided comic relief in the home with their crazy antics at just the right time to make the right amount of excitement. When we think about getting a dog, all those memories begin to resurface and often will influence our thinking. After all, who does not want a dog that is loyal, protective, loving, and courageous? So go right ahead. Many larger dogs have all these qualities and more to offer.

If you have younger children in the home that are in kindergarten to junior high age, one of the large dog breeds might be a good idea for several reasons. First of all, the dogs are big enough to interact with the larger children well. They can be a lot of companionship for the child during these important years of growing up.

As an added bonus, they can also often be very protective of their young charges. As every parent knows, protecting children is the priority around the home. Knowing that your dog will not tolerate danger to the child, and has the muscle and size to back that up, means you can rest a little easier.

Finally, larger dogs often have personalities that make it possible for the pet to relate to everyone in the home. Men tend to favor larger dogs anyway, so there is an instant connection there. Women may enjoy the fact that the larger dog will often be somewhat territorial and more likely to alert the adults when something is amiss around the house. Children will delight in the larger dog, since the pet will seem to be both playmate and protector for them. All in all, many of the large dog breeds have all the above benefits and will offer better peace of mind.
